We worry putting our family first means we'll be forced to abandon our careers. We're afraid if we pause our careers, we'll be forever off track. This thinking is outdated - forget what you've heard about how pauses are career limiting, about how those who pause lack ambition, or that if you do pause you won't be able to reenter the paid workforce. That's a flawed reality, one that doesn't reflect the truth of the careers of some of the most successful women in this country.
Author Lisen Stromberg knows this success firsthand. After the birth of her second child, she did something she never imagined she would do She opted out to focus on her family. But her career didn't end there. Lisen paused, then pivoted to become first a social entrepreneur and then an award-winning journalist writing about women, work, and life in Silicon Valley. Along the way she learned she wasn't alone. Lisen met many highly successful women who told her they never "opted out" but who had, in fact, temporarily downshifted or paused their careers. Their hidden journeys revealed alternative nonlinear paths to the top that enabled them to achieve their personal and professional goals.
In Work PAUSE Thrive, Lisen shares their stories. Deeply rooted in social science research, cutting-edge data collected from nearly 1,500 women, and 186 first-person interviews, this book reveals how trailblazing women have disrupted the traditional career paradigm. What worked for them can work for you.
In this book you'll learn
- Who pauses, how they do it, and why
- How pausing can enrich both your career and your life
- How to innovate your own nonlinear career path
- What we can - and need - to do as a society to make it possible for more people to achieve their personal and professional goals
Work PAUSE Thrive also reveals new and exciting trends in the workplace and offers targeted solutions for companies to help ensure they have cultures that will enable you to lead the life you want, a life in which you can build both a career and a family and ultimately your own version of a life well lived.

I really enjoyed reading Work.Pause.Thrive (WPT). As the author herself states early in the book, its advice will not be actionable or relevant for everyone. Many working mothers will never have the luxury of deciding how to balance their families and careers. Other women never really got a chance to decide for themselves if they wanted to be mothers. Those are bigger issues that we all need to continue fighting for (the author gives suggestions in the final chapter). With that stated, as someone who falls squarely in the target demographic for this book (in a word, privileged), I couldn't have been happier to have been introduced to it (thanks Poornima Vijayashanker!). It came at just the right moment when I was weighing a lot of beliefs and plans around children and career (aka a few months after my 30th birthday).I have always been heavily career-oriented, independent, and ambitious. I spent the first part of my career moving around the world and back and thought I would do that forever. I surprised myself three years ago when I met my wonderful partner and decided to settle down a bit, even following him from the US to Europe for his career.
We know without a doubt that we want to have children, but I was worried that, between getting married and becoming the trailing spouse, I was "off track" and certainly couldn't add children to the mix. Yet I also couldn't push my "dream" career goals forward because they all involved traveling for up to 6 months at a time in remote and risky places, something that I didn't want to put our young marriage through.
Reading WPT has helped me come to terms with the fact that I don't have to have resolved this dilemma yet: that my career doesn't have an expiry date. That it is okay to work in a job in my field that I like (if not love) and fully love the other parts of my life, like my beautiful marriage and the prospect of a family. (Incidentally, I don't know who plants this insidious idea in women's minds that we should achieve everything by 30. I blame a lot of it on the dirty, unstated societal assumption that nothing women do counts for much unless we're still "hot.")
As I read, I recognized the heart of my issue: I was delaying kids for career and delaying career for kids. What a recipe for discontent!
Most of my career role models and mentors are women who have delayed or chosen not to have children. Within my group of close friends, most are also deciding not to have children. In this situation, having the examples in this book and seeing that other women have come out on the other side of children "alive" is invaluable. (It may sound silly, but it feels like a life-or-death decision at times!)
The old line "What would you do if you weren't scared?" is mostly taken to apply to our careers and following our passions. Well, if I weren't scared, I would have a family without caring what other people thought and with the confidence that I could continue contributing to my field and building my career.
So, thanks for the encouragement to not be scared, to figure this out as I go, and to play the (lucky) cards that life has dealt me. I hope that other women (and men) read WPT and pull inspiration for their own situations.

Work PAUSE Thrive How to Pause for Parenthood Without Killing Your Career (Audible Audio Edition) Lisen Stromberg Audible Studios Books Reviews
The DVD didn't work. Not sure why, what was wrong, but it just didn't play.
Well researched and thoughtfully presented, Lisen Stromberg offers a powerful manifesto in support of women who want that rewarding professional career but also a meaningful personal life. She acknowledges that both require commitment and stamina. Her prescription - that you can have it all, if perhaps not all at once - is an exhale for the working mom who tries so hard to make it all work (that would be me). Her suggestions are practical and based on real life solutions provided by the many women she interviewed. I particularly enjoyed her narrator's voice and personal stories of how she sought work/life balance - occasionally setting aside her professional ambition when she opted to prioritize family. Wow! Apparently it is okay to pause. You will survive, and in her summary conclusions, thrive. Who knew?
I highly recommend Lisen's book for anyone feeling frustrated by the confines of a "traditional" or linear career path as she calls it. It's time for both men and women to get clear on their values, what success looks like to them and then pursue that with intensity. Only then will we find more fulfillment and peace and true success. As Tony Robbin's says "Success without fulfillment is the ultimate failure" and this book focuses on how to avoid blindly chasing someone else's definition of success and forgetting the importance of our own fulfillment and happiness along the way.
Whether you’re a Momma or a millennial starting your career- this book is great for anyone in any career field to read! If you like hearing other people’s stories & gaining wisdom from other people- this book is one I highly recommend! Lisen Stromberg is an award-winning journalist, sought-after speaker, and CEO and founder of PrismWork, a culture innovation consultancy. Work Pause Thrive takes any reader on a journey through not only the author’ life, but also 186 other women as they talk about the challenges and strategies they used to accomplish the perfect work & life balance.
irst & foremost- let me say how much I appreciate an organized book! Lisen Stromberg’s organization of this book not only made it an easy read, but also made it easy for the reader to back and re-read their favorite parts! Separated into parts as well as chapters, the Index is great for quick references. Another thing I really LOVED about this book was the “Women on the Rise” survey in the appendix. Due to the fact that I love numbers and spreadsheets- I found this data so interesting and very unexpected! Lisen’s in-dept research on the topic of women in the workforce was so well organized and can be perceived as very beneficial to anyone!
Lisen used her personal experiences to make this read very transparent, allowing the reader to get a glimpse of some of her personal obstacles and how she overcame them in terms of returning back to the workforce. Wanting a better work/life balance, Lisen helps readers to understand that not only is everyone’s ideal of success different, but also that every perception of success can be accomplished. She discusses public policies that create challenges, cultures that don’t working women, as well as trailblazers that continue to break the glass ceiling, regardless of how high they have to climb. This book explains how taking a break from work is not detrimental to careers, but instead can be beneficial to home life experiences such as reaching personal goals. received a free copy of Work PAUSE Thrive in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own
